GM Crop Contamination Forcing U.S. Farmers

Thursday, May 7, 2015 - The good news is that the demand for organic food is on the rise and is expected to continue to rise 
as more and more consumers have become disenchanted with GM food and are seeking more healthful diets. Many companies are finding it difficult to find enough organic products to meet the demand.
The bad news is there are many stumbling blocks that are making it difficult if not impossible to successfully grow organic food.
Contamination of organic crops by adjacent GM crops results in a ‘double-whammy’ as not only does the farmer lose organic certification but also is apt to be sued by Monsanto and other GM companies for patent infringement.
Certification costs for the organic farm can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. There is no requirement to certify “biotech” crops or even to reveal the often fraudulent research used by Monsanto, Bayer, Dow, Syngenta, etc to gain USDA approval.
Given this uneven playing field that is ignored by government agencies, is it any wonder that many previously organic farmers are opting out of the competition?
One thing is for certain, the fight between biotech and the organic farmer is not a fair fight at all.
